That one wish inspired the founding of Make-A-Wish® and launched the wish granting movement that circles the globe today. Beginning April 1 and culminating today, April 29th, now known as World Wish Day®, Make-A-Wish chapters throughout the country are marking the special event with a campaign to raise dollars and airline miles to fund airline tickets for wishes that involve travel.
Each year, Make-A-Wish Connecticut grants over 150 wishes life-changing wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions. These wish experiences can be pivot points in the course of a child’s treatment, making them feel better and in some cases, even helping them get better. A wish-come-true strengthens families, provides moments of happiness and inspiration, and helps create strong community bonds.
Nearly 75 percent of wishes require air travel, making it a critical – and costly – resource. In fact, approximately 600 airline tickets, the equivalent of 30 million airlines miles, are needed each year to get local wish kids and their families to and from these incredible experiences.
As an added incentive, WWE® Superstar John Cena® will personally match every frequent flier mile donated in the entire month of April, up to 4.5 million. United Airlines will also support World Wish Day by matching the donations of its MileagePlus® members, up to 3 million miles, through tomorrow, April 30.
Several other Make-A-Wish sponsors are coordinating special World Wish Day promotions nationally, including Maggiano’s Little Italy®, Marquis®, Brooks Brothers, and Dave & Buster’s. The month will culminate with the announcement of a new, national sponsor.

Hannah has always had a love of animals and a fascination with the Iditarod. For as long as she can remember, her dream has been to travel to Alaska and experience the traditions and excitement of the renowned event.
Hannah has had to put that dream on hold over the years, as she was diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition that would take her away from the normal routines of a 14-year-old girl and fill her days with doctors, hospitals, and treatments. But Hannah’s determination and positive attitude have been a force to be reckoned with through it all. She’s faced her condition head-on and never once allowed it to define who she was.
When Hannah was asked what her one true wish would be, it was no surprise to anyone what the answer to that question was – to go to Alaska and experience the Iditarod!
Hannah’s trip into the snowy state was not only as a spectator, either. When she arrived, Hannah was immediately a celebrity. Signs downtown, signs along the trail, and signs at the finish line cheered her name as a hero for all that she had overcome. Hannah had the chance to walk through the sled teams, spend time with the dogs and their owners, and speak with all sorts of publicists present to cover the historic moment. And to top it all off, the team that sponsored Hannah, Iditarod Partner Donlin Gold and Iditarod vet Ramey Smith, gave Hannah, quite literally, a front row seat in the sled for the opening ceremonies as they pushed off to begin the race!
Hannah’s trip to Alaska was more than she ever could have imagined. A dream that she had held in her heart for years had finally come true, and the memories she and her family created have overshadowed her difficult times of the past. For Hannah, this was the perfect way to begin a new chapter in her life.
Wish granted!
That one wish inspired the founding of Make-A-Wish® and launched the wish granting movement that circles the globe today. Beginning April 1 and culminating in World Wish Day® on April 29, Make-A-Wish chapters throughout the country will mark the special event with a campaign to raise dollars and airline miles to fund airline tickets for wishes that involve travel.
As an added incentive, WWE® Superstar John Cena® will personally match every frequent flier mile donated in April, up to 4.5 million. United Airlines will also support World Wish Day by matching the donations of its MileagePlus® members, up to 3 million miles, through April 30.
Several other Make-A-Wish sponsors are coordinating special World Wish Day promotions nationally, including Maggiano’s Little Italy®, Marquis®, Brooks Brothers, and Dave & Buster’s. The month will culminate with the announcement of a new, national sponsor.
