On August 25, 2016, Anthony’s parents received devastating news: their seven-year-old son had cancer. Within days, Anthony had surgery to place a port in his chest, a bone marrow aspiration and a spinal tap to inject chemotherapy drugs. In pain and terrified to move in case he pulled his port out, Anthony struggled to stay optimistic.
For the next seven months, Anthony battled the cancer while coping with debilitating side effects and exhausting medical treatments. Overwhelmed, the family looked for something positive to focus on, and that “something” ended up being a wish. In between Facebook posts about Anthony’s platelet levels and feeding tube complications was the constant countdown to his wish to go to Walt Disney World.
For one magical week that summer, the family left cancer behind and just enjoyed being together. When they returned, his mom had to this to say, “The whole trip was incredible! Anthony did great handling all the walking and the heat. He only needed a wheelchair a couple of times because of his legs feeling week and tired. I was so proud of him!”
Today, Anthony is in remission and looking forward to finishing all the treatments designed to keep his cancer from returning. When the days are long or challenging, you can still see photos from his wish pop on his family’s Facebook page, reminding everyone to stay hopeful, that there are more wonderful memories to be made.
Special thanks to Bristol-Myers Squibb for helping wishes like Anthony’s come true!
